Are you passionate about helping others overcome addiction? Becoming a Certified Peer Specialist in addiction recovery is a deeply fulfilling career that allows you to provide essential support and guidance to those in need. In this interview, Josh Brooks, a dedicated Certified Peer Specialist, shares his journey and how ACTS Consulting's courses have prepared him for success. Discover how these programs can help you embark on a meaningful career in addiction recovery.
Diane: What is your current professional title?
Josh: I am a Certified Peer Specialist.
Diane: What motivated you to pursue a career in addiction recovery?
Josh: I grew up in an environment of active addiction and have battled addictions for most of my adult life. I found recovery through support, education, and empowerment, learning a new way of life I didn’t know was possible. Blessed with that support, I felt a calling—and even a duty—to serve others. Providing education, support, and empowerment to their lives isn’t just a job or career for me; it’s my purpose.
Diane: Which courses did you take with ACTS Consulting? Were they online or in-person?
Josh: I took addiction counselor courses, CIT courses, and received specialized education in resolving anger. Clinical supervision was provided weekly by ACTS Consulting for the organization I work for.
Diane: Do you think the education received from ACTS Consulting has prepared you for your professional role?
Josh: Yes, 100%.
Diane: What were the strengths and weaknesses of your online education compared to traditional in-person learning?
Josh: The strengths include the comfort of being at home, which made me feel at ease and relaxed. It also eliminated financial stress by removing travel costs. I don’t feel I missed anything from the education or learning process. However, the emotional connection can be less intense with online learning. In-person training makes it easier to connect with peers. For heavily emotional courses like resolving anger, the impact might not be the same if conducted online. Finally, for addiction counselor courses, I did both virtual and in-person and felt the information was received and processed equally.
Diane: What strategies do you use to stay updated with the latest research and best practices in addiction recovery?
Josh: I complete continued education hours to keep my credentials up to date. I attend webinars and in-person courses on a wide range of topics related to Substance Use Disorders and Mental Health challenges. Additionally, I participate in parenting courses, CPS youth courses, and conventions of adoption companies to better understand the unique challenges faced by foster families.
Diane: What are your long-term career goals in addiction recovery?
Josh: My ultimate goal is to open a recovery community organization to serve anyone suffering from Substance Use Disorder, Mental Health challenges, and family restoration. I want to focus on families going through the adoption process, including birth mothers, foster families, and children, and provide peer and clinical support for all parties under one roof.
Diane: Are there any specific courses you recommend for individuals entering the field of recovery and addiction counseling/coaching, aimed at preparing the next generation of professionals?
Josh: I highly recommend courses in cultural competency and ethics, especially those supporting veterans. This was a personal barrier for me. Lastly, supervision or courses specific to secondary trauma are crucial.
