While a bachelor’s degree is often sufficient for entry-level positions, earning a master’s degree in addiction counseling, mental health counseling, or a related field can significantly enhance your qualifications and open up more advanced career opportunities and transition to further professional development. Consider the possibility



Step 5: Complete a State-Approved Training Program

Enroll in a state-approved addiction counseling education program. These programs typically cover various aspects of substance use disorders, including treatment methods, addressing co-occurring (SA/MH) conditions, counseling techniques, treatment planning, and ethical practice. Make sure the program you choose meets the certification requirements of the state where you plan to practice. In addition to the completion of your substance use disorder education program, another requirement is working in the field; gaining practical work experience under direct supervision to solidify your skills.
